How To Pick Ground Bison

When picking ground bison for homemade dog treats, select lean, 90–95% fat-free (or higher) to ensure easier dehydration and better storage longevity. Choose grass-fed options when possible for better nutrition, and ensure the product is 100% bison with no added salt, spices, or preservatives that can be toxic to dogs.

Instructions

  1. Cook the bison in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain the bison to remove any excess fat and pat dry with paper towels. 
  2. Place the cooked bison, egg, mashed sweet potato, broccoli, oat flour, dried rosemary or parsley, and beef broth in a food processor. Pulse until fully combined and dough forms. If the mixture is too soft, add more oat flour as needed. 
  3. Shape the dough into small ½-inch thick balls, then flatten slightly with the palm of your hand.  
  4. Place the treats evenly between the food dehydrator trays, ensuring they don’t overlap. 
  5. Set temperature to 165°F and time to 6 hours, then tap Start/Stop. 
  6. Remove the treats when done. 
  7. Cool to room temperature on the trays. Store in an airtight container. 

Chef Notes: Make sure to shape the treats small enough for your dog to safely eat them.
